Collaborative Creative Blog
For the collaborative unit of the first Masters in Virtual Reality, we were given a project brief and had to create an immersive event experience based on the project testimonials.
I decided to focus this term on the development of my skills in immersive media capture and therefore wanted to create a project which included 360 video. This meant a challenge in itself as the majority of the class have pursued a path which focused on computer Generated environments.
I wanted to however emphasise the importance of utilising 360 degree video to capture real life environments and transport the user to both virtual landscapes and natural landscapes, both which they could experience through a Virtual Reality headset.
In addition, through this collaboration we would advance and also combine computer Generated environments of landscapes created which reflected the artistic creations of Sohlberg, used in our project.
Through collaborating with the sound departments and programmes in University, we were able to explore various methods for the capture of sound as well as gain a strong foundation in the different types of sound capture methods.
In working on this project, it was highly informative in the practice of creating narratives in virtual reality storytelling which combine the usage of computer Generated environments and 350 degree video for immersive and interactive entertainment experiences.
Much of this was done to further research my knowledge of the development narrative structure in virtual reality. Through the creation of this experience, I hope we can reflect how the myriad of mediums created an experience which truly created a full and satisfying experience. In addition, I vehemently believe that 360 degree video is one of the most powerful mediums for immersion and entertainment, for it provides a higher sense of realism in that it captures reality and places the audience within it. With the creation of computer Generated experiences, although there is a greater sense of immersion and interactivity, the construct of the artificial world is more present and thus less realistic from the perspective of the user experience.
Moreover, we can ascertain from the development of the film medium, that audiences have to in essence be introduced to the technological advances in stages so that they may adapt naturally to the changed method of consuming the media.
